Parent Coaching
Why a parenting coach?
- You're "too close to the forest to see the trees."
- You're lost in the conflict.
- Doing what you know helps gets all mixed up with being protective, your issues, wanting/not wanting to do what your parents did, what others think, and just plain old fear!
- You hear yourself saying the same thing over and over again - and expecting different results.
- No one gave you a manual!
- Where did that sweet child go?
- You want to foster independence AND keep them safe AND still have a relationship.
- You are ready.
Whether you have a healthy relationship and want to keep it that way or you are lost in the conflict and need help, I will walk with you. Like all my coaching, we will work your way, in your style and tapping into your strengths. I am happy to help you figure out if coaching is right for you and your situation. (See sidebar.)
To learn more about coaching with me, visit our FAQ page. Here are a few FAQ's specific to Parent Coaching.
Q: We're having problems. How do I know if coaching, family therapy, mediation or something else is best?
When you are in conflict, this can feel like the million dollar question. Trust yourself. Mediation is great for resolving specific issues or families of issues, like curfew, expectations, etc. When it all feels old, too familiar, convoluted and/or nobody feels like they are on the same page, family therapy can be the ticket. Coaching can be helpful when you want to be a better parent, tap into your strengths to do that, support your child's strengths, figure out where the lines are or how to find balance in your parenting, etc. Coaching can also help you figure out which is right for your situation. I will always give you an honest read, even if it does not involve me.
Q: Do I have to be in crisis to do parent coaching?
Absolutely not. In fact, the best time to do coaching is when you are not in the throes of crisis. But in reality, this is often when we seek support. Whether you are stressed by a current situation or simply wanting to be a better parent, we will work to build healthy relationships rooted in everyone's strengths - even the strengths of the situation that may seem so untenable.
Q: Do you do coaching with a parent and child together?
Generally, this is not the case. However, I am happy to discuss this option with you to determine whether it is, in fact, the best viable option.
Q: Do you do coaching with young people?
Yes, but only when the young person is ready and sincerely wishes to enter into a coaching relationship.
