| | | CHRIS' REFLECTION - Shed the light… | | While I'm on vacation, and with the New Year upon us, a reprise of this piece seemed just right. Imagine yourself floating in the black, black vastness of space. You struggle to see - much less accurately perceive and interpret - what is there. Your only source of light is the beam of the flashlight you hold in your hand. THAT is about how much "reality" we are able to perceive at any given moment. You may change where you aim the beam, but there is always more - exponentially more - going on, exponentially more that is "true" than you can hope to see. "Great!" you say. "As if my job and my relationships and my life weren't difficult enough!" Ah, but there is such power here. For once we embrace this truth, we can stop pretending that what we notice - that is, where we happen to be pointing the beam - is what IS. Let me use you as an example. How much of who you are do you think others really notice? Can they hear the judges that talk incessantly in your head? Can they see your dreams? Can they feel your fears? Do they know how you think about them? Do they know why you are distracted? Do they have any idea how you interpreted what they said? Do they know that the tag on your shirt always bugs you? Do they know you're worried that the little lump in your skin is something serious? Do they know… know… know...? And this is just a fraction of the stuff YOU are conscious of! What about what neither one of you perceives? So let's stop the charade. Let's stop pretending we know what is "real." When we do this, what we have left is choice - the choice of where to aim the flashlight. All of us make this choice - consciously or not - every day. When we know we are making the choice, we can choose to do so with awareness, purpose and plan. And anything we do with awareness is, by definition, of higher quality than that which we do without awareness. That's it. No encouragement to focus on strengths. If you've been reading this Ezine for any time at all, you're already doing that. Just admit that there is more than you see - a lot more… exponentially more - and decide where you are going to shed the light. With my wishes for a joyful New Year filled with light.
