Spring visited us in Maine this weekend and it was glorious. Those of you in warm climates won't appreciate what this means after months of sub-freezing temps and 100+ inches of snow, but take my word for it, it puts folks in a mighty good mood.
So when friends stopped by on their morning walk and we got into a discussion about the distraction of technology, it was not surprising that the conversation turned to the absurdity of seeing people outside… with their noses in the Blackberries. "Look up" you want to yell at them. "Can't you see how beautiful it is out here?"
This is a great metaphor for what we do in life. We get so preoccupied with the negative thoughts in our heads that we forget to look up and see the miracles happening around us: kids who are growing and discovering, friends who wish we had time just to walk, partners who still love us and long to reconnect. We can go to therapy to better understand our thoughts. We can read self-help books to learn to think differently. We can meditate, ruminate and cultivate new practices. But sometimes what we need to do most is just look up; get our heads out of our metaphorical rear-ends and look up. The world is a beautiful, miraculous, ever-expanding place - but only if we lift our eyes and notice.
Here's a little help to get you started. The rest is up to you.
Look up!
